 WORKPLACE CONFLICT MANAGEMENT

Management consultations can help resolve problematic interpersonal issues and promote desired changes in supervisory or employee groups.

Most management consultations consist of:

1) A discovery phase (during which the nature of the problem is identified)

2) A planning stage (in which a measurable plan is developed), and

3) An execution phase.

A follow-up plan is then developed, to monitor the success of the consultation and to identify any additional interventions necessary to reinforce the implemented changes.

The following are examples of situations in which a management consultation might be beneficial:

  • Conflict within employee workgroups which is compromising productivity or safety.
  • Termination of an emotionally-troubled employee.
  • Assessment of threats of workplace violence.
  • Conflict between managers, which is interfering with business outcome.
  • Performance difficulties across a workgroup, which may indicate the need for modifications in management style or procedures.
